Turku, Finland. (May 2, 2006) - Viola Systems,
a leader in industrial-grade wireless M2M connectivity solutions,
today announced the launch of its Arctic EDGE Router™ product,
the latest addition to its wide range of wireless connectivity solutions
for the industry. When compared to GSM and GPRS technologies, EDGE
offers higher data rates approximately according to the following:
EDGE
= 3 * GPRS speed
With the Arctic EDGE Router™, virtually
any remote device can be connected to the corporate IP network via
cellular GSM networks with ease and cost-efficiently. The Arctic
EDGE Router™ is ideal for use in difficult to reach locations
where the use of wireline networks is not feasible or a high-speed
backup connection is required. The Arctic EDGE Router™ allows
instant and trouble-free deployment as it takes only a few minutes
to mount and power up the Arctic unit.
“Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution,
or EDGE, is a digital mobile phone technology which acts as a bolt-on
enhancement to 2G and 2.5G General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) networks.
EDGE (also known as EGPRS) is a superset to GPRS and can function
on any network with GPRS deployed on it, provided the carrier implements
the necessary upgrades” says Wikipedia, the famous encyclopedia
on the Internet.
”The Arctic EDGE Router™ is a highly
important amendment to our existing portfolio as it offers higher-speed
connectivity with nation-wide coverage at the city centers, and
more importantly – beyond the city centers. From M2M applications
point of view, EDGE offers significantly higher data rates compared
to GPRS,” comments Jyrki Penttonen, CEO of
Viola Systems.
The Arctic EDGE Router™ is ideal for applications
that call for relatively high throughput speeds within and beyond
city centers. These applications include video surveillance, backup
connections, moving vehicles and any data intensive remote control
application in general.
”The Arctic EDGE Router™ is the
first product in its category that is of industrial-grade, meets
our requirements for high quality and which we can safely recommend
to be used in our end-customer’s mission-critical video surveillance
applications. EDGE is widely available here in Italy. Although live
video feed can be transferred over GPRS connection, it is a fact
that EDGE gives you more bandwidth. More bandwidth leads to enhanced
video quality and better overall user experience,” explains
Andrea Gallini, CEO of SIR.tel. snc di Gallini
A. & C., Viola’s sales partner in Italy.
The Arctic EDGE Router™ seamlessly connects
any Ethernet device to a high-speed cellular network. It comes with
the following key features:
- industrial-grade, robust design targeted
at demanding industrial applications
- easy and quick to install
- built-in firewall and virtual private
network (VPN) capabilities for secure networking
- automatic switch over to GPRS if EDGE is
not available
- quad-band: can be used in any GSM network
worldwide (Europe, Asia, USA)
- mobile operator independent static IP
addresses when used together with the Viola M2M Gateway
The Arctic EDGE Router™ is immediately
available for purchase through our global network of distributors.
